IPL 2024: Kolkata Knight Riders Champions — Final, Venue & Season Story
Winner: Kolkata Knight Riders · Runner-up: Sunrisers Hyderabad · Final venue: Chennai
The IPL 2024 season belongs to Kolkata Knight Riders, who beat Sunrisers Hyderabad in a final staged in Chennai. It was a season from the modern mega-auction era, with 10 teams from 2022 and record media-rights money — and like every IPL year, it is best understood through its final: the two teams left standing after two months of league cricket, playing one match for the trophy.
History reads the 2024 season through its ending: Kolkata Knight Riders champions for the 3 time in their history, Sunrisers Hyderabad runners-up with their count still at 1. Strip away the noise of a two-month season and that is the permanent record — the line that appears in every winners table, every quiz, every argument about which franchise owns which era.
Staging the 2024 final in Chennai mattered beyond ceremony — it was the ground's 3 IPL final, and home-city crowds for a neutral final bring a different energy from a home final. For the record books, Chennai joins the small set of cities that have crowned multiple champions, and for the two squads it remains the night their seasons were ultimately judged by.
Legacy is a slow statistic. The 2024 title sits in Kolkata Knight Riders's cabinet permanently, part of the count every future squad of theirs will be measured against, while Sunrisers Hyderabad's wait — or drought, depending on the franchise — extended by one more year. Supporters understand this instinctively: nobody remembers league positions, everybody remembers finals.
As of the end of the 2026 season, Sunrisers Hyderabad have not appeared in another IPL final since 2024. In a ten-team league with one trophy a year, that absence is its own statistic — and the first thing their supporters will want changed in 2027.
Chennai Super Kings came into this cycle as the previous champions; by the end of 2024, the title belonged to Kolkata Knight Riders. The following season crowned Royal Challengers Bengaluru, so Kolkata Knight Riders's reign as champions lasted the standard single year.
