How the IPL Began

The Indian Premier League was launched by the BCCI on 13 September 2007, as India's T20 World Cup campaign began, and the first franchise auction in January 2008 raised $723.59 million for eight teams. The league was the BCCI's answer to the rebel Indian Cricket League — and it worked instantly: the inaugural 2008 season, won by Shane Warne's underdog Rajasthan Royals, proved that city franchises, player auctions and prime-time T20 could fuse into the richest league in cricket.

Since then the league has survived a season moved to South Africa (2009), two seasons partly or fully in the UAE (2020–21), the suspension and later return of CSK and RR, and expansion to 10 teams in 2022. Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings lead the honours board with five titles each.
